Some but not all of the dead were students. It's not clear yet if the shooter was a student. The gunman was killed, but it's not known if he was shot by police or took his own life.

Officials say the first of the deaths took place in a dorm at around 7:15 a.m. The shootings continued about two hours later, on the other side of campus, in an engineering building, where 20 of the 21 victims were killed.

The school's president calls it a tragedy of "monumental proportions."

Until today, the deadliest campus shooting in US history took place in 1966 at the University of Texas, where Charles Whitman killed 16 people from the observation deck of a clock tower.

At Columbine High in 1999, two teen-agers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher, then took their own lives.
