Al Gore endorses Barack Obama

Al Gore has announced that he would endorse Barack Obama, in a move that the Democratic presidential candidate hopes will help to unite the party as the general election begins in earnest.
The former vice president, Nobel peace laureate and Oscar winner, was due to appear on stage with Mr Obama in Detroit.

In a message emailed to his supporters, he said: "A few hours from now I will step on stage to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama.

"From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States."
