SYRIA: KORAN MORE POPULAR THAN EVER

Women and the younger set are more intent than ever in learning the Koran. Heretofore, there was a small clique of Islamics that governedSyria. Government leaders in fact warned citizens that their future wasgoing to be more and more secular.

However, the facts state otherwise. Instead of turning more secular,Syria is turning more cultic for Allah devotees.
Islamic schools for females have become especially attractive in recent times.

Instructors inform media that the younger girls do not understandeverything they are taught regarding the Koran; but as they mature, theyfind that the Koran becomes a part of their inner core."Enas al-Kaldi stops in the hallway of her Islamic school for girls andcoaxes her 6-year-old schoolmate through a short recitation from theKoran.

"'It's true that they don't understand what they are memorizing at this age, but we believe that the understanding comes when the Koran becomespart of you,' Ms. Kaldi, 16, said proudly" per the New York Times'Katherine Zoepf.
