IRAQ: YOUR NAME COULD KILL YOU

That’s the young fellow’s real name. But now he wants to change it because his real name could slay him. He wants his first name now to be Sajad. That is a word that Shiites look on as legitimate. But with “Saddam Hussein” as his name, it could mean the Shiites would murder him.

Of course, the man did not choose his name. It was chosen by his parents. But today that name is not for life-keeping. It’s anathema.

According to New York Times’ Edward Wong, many are realizing that to exist in Iraq they must change what identifies them the most: the given name. Just one more complication of living in the post-Saddam Hussein era. And just another complication living in a nation that is at war with itself.

Operation Iraqi Freedom enthusiasts had hoped that Sunnis and Shiites and Kurds would desire freedom so much that they would work together for not only a constitution, but a real-life community.

Not so.

What has resulted is not an admiration for democracy, Parliament, constitution, free elections and personal liberties, but the usual Muslim slaughtering Muslim.
