Nine were struck by the Jeep Cherokee Laredo during lunch hour at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus.

Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, 22, of Iran, was driving. Motive? He had said that he wanted to “avenge the American treatment of Muslims,” according to an FBI Special Agent.

Mohammed revved up his vehicle, then directed it toward the gathering of students. He sped away. Then he dialed 911, informing security forces to get him. He submitted to authorities without resistance, according to AP’s Meling Arounnarath and Lisa Hoppenjans.

He will be charged with nine counts of “attempted first degree murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.”

"’Islam is a religion of peace,’” a freshman said after the incident.
